Choosing the right school is one of the biggest decisions for families moving to Tel Aviv. International schools offer a smooth transition and a globally-recognized education. Here’s what you need to know.
1. The Core Benefit: Curriculum and Continuity International schools primarily follow globally-recognized curricula, allowing for seamless transitions between countries.
IB (International Baccalaureate): Offered by many top schools, it's respected by universities worldwide and focuses on critical thinking.
American Curriculum: Leads to a US High School Diploma, often with AP (Advanced Placement) courses.
Other National Curricula: Some schools follow British, French, or other national systems.
2. The Language and Cultural Environment
Student Body: Typically a diverse mix of expatriate children, English-speaking Israelis, and returning overseas Israelis.
Instruction Language: Primarily English, with strong Hebrew language programs and often other foreign languages.
Cultural Integration: These schools provide a supportive environment for new arrivals while also offering opportunities to connect with Israeli culture.
3. Key Considerations for Your Choice
Accreditation: Ensure the school is accredited by a recognized international body (e.g., CIS, MSA, IB).
Location and Campus: Tel Aviv traffic is heavy. Consider proximity and the quality of the facilities (labs, sports, arts).
School Philosophy: Visit the schools. Does the atmosphere feel right? Is it highly academic, or more holistic and creative?
4. The Application Process Start early, often a year in advance. Be prepared with:
Previous school records.
Application forms and fees.
Student and sometimes parent interviews.
Entrance assessments.
This is an investment in your child's future and your family's peace of mind.
